Jharkhand CM Champai Soren Resigns Paving Way For JMM Chief Hemant Soren

Jharkhand News: Jharkhand Chief Minister Champai Soren on Wednesday tendered his resignation to Governor CP Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan in Ranchi.

JMM Executive President Hemant Soren has staked claim to form government for the third time after legislators of the party-led I.N.D.I.A bloc reached a consensus in the state.

Leaders and MLAs of the bloc, during a meeting at Chief Minister Champai Soren’s residence in Ranchi, unanimously decided to elect Soren as JMM legislature party leader, they said. “A decision was taken in the meeting to replace Champai Soren with Hemant Soren,” a party source told PTI.

If sworn in, the JMM chief will be the 13th chief minister of Jharkhand. The meeting was also attended by Congress Jharkhand in-charge Ghulam Ahmad Mir and its state president Rajesh Thakur, besides Hemant Soren’s brother Basant and wife Kalpana.

Soren was released from jail on June 28 after nearly five months, as the high court granted him bail in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam. He had resigned as the CM before his arrest on January 31.

A crucial meeting of I.N.D.I.A bloc legislators was held in Ranchi today amid speculations of a change of guard in the state, MLAs of the alliance said. The meeting has been convened by former Jharkhand chief minister Hemant Soren, who is also the executive president of the ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM).

Soren was released from jail on June 28 after nearly five months, as the high court granted him bail in a money laundering case linked to an alleged land scam.

“A change of guard in the state is possible… This meeting is crucial. All the legislators of the ruling alliance assembled here at 11 AM,” a party source told PTI. The speculations were fuelled by the sudden cancellation of all important programmes of Chief Minister Champai Soren, including the distribution of appointment letters to 1,500 selected teachers on Wednesday.
