Lok Sabha Session: After the ruling NDA bloc announced Om Birla as its candidate for the post of speaker in the Lok Sabha, the Opposition I.N.D.I.A bloc on Tuesday nominated Congress MP K Suresh for the post. He is an eight time MP from Kerala. This comes after the NDA and I.N.D.I.A bloc failed to reach a consensus on Speaker and Deputy Speaker posts. Suresh has filed his nomination.
The election for the post of speaker in the Lower House is set to take place on Wednesday. With K Suresh’s nomination for the post, it will be the first time that an election will be held for the speaker post in the Lower House.
On his nomination for the post of Lok Sabha Speaker, K Suresh said, “I have filed my nomination. It is the party’s decision, not mine. There is a convention in Lok Sabha that the Speaker will be from the ruling party and the Deputy Speaker will be from the opposition… Deputy Speaker is our right. But they are not ready to give it to us. Till 11:50 am we were waiting for a response from the government, but they did not give any response. That is why we filed the nomination.”

Earlier in the day, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) nominated Om Birla as its nominee for the post of Speaker for the 18th Lok Sabha. He will file his nomination papers at 11:30 AM.
On the election of the Speaker for the Lower House, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said that the entire Opposition would support the Speaker but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition.
“Today it is written in the newspaper that PM Modi has said that the Opposition should cooperate with the Govt constructively. Rajnath Singh called Mallikarjun Kharge and he asked him to extend support to the Speaker. The entire Opposition said that we would support the Speaker but the convention is that the Deputy Speaker post should be given to the opposition. Rajnath Singh said that he would call back Mallikarjun Kharge but he has not done that yet…PM Modi is asking for cooperation from Opposition but our leader is getting insulted,” Rahul Gandhi said, as quoted by news agency ANI.
The first session of the 18th Lok Sabha started on Monday, which witnessed Prime Minister Narendra Modi take oath as the Member of Parliament for the third time in a row. The 18th Lok Sabha session was held on Monday after the Lok Sabha polls concluded on June 4.
After PM Modi, the Council of Ministers were administered oath by pro tem Speaker Bhartruhari Mahtab, who was appointed by President Droupadi Murmu. Thereafter, the newly elected MPs were sworn in as members of the Lower House in the alphabetical order of the names of the state, starting from Assam.
