Australia Expands Visa Biometrics in India: What Applicants Need to Know

From 26 October 2026, people lodging new Australian visa applications in India may be asked to provide fingerprints and a facial image. The Department of Home Affairs will issue individual instructions, and some eligible applicants may be able to complete their identity check digitally rather than visiting a collection centre.

Australia has expanded its visa biometric collection programme to India, introducing an additional identity-verification step for certain new visa applications lodged from 26 October 2026. The change brings India into a programme that already covers applicants in nearly 60 countries.

For Indians planning to visit Australia, study there, take up employment or join family members, the immediate priority is understanding whether biometrics have been requested and following the instructions issued by the Australian Department of Home Affairs.

The announcement does not mean that every applicant must automatically attend a biometric appointment. The department will notify applicants who need to provide the information and explain how they should complete the process.

Who is affected by the new requirement?

The expanded arrangements apply to new Australian visa applications lodged in India on or after 26 October 2026. Applications lodged before that date are not affected by this change, and visas already granted are not retrospectively affected by the announcement.

Applicants across different visa pathways—including visitor, student, work and family-related applications—should check the instructions associated with their individual case. The requirement is not a blanket instruction for every person applying for every visa category: the department determines whether an applicant must provide biometrics.

Applicants should also distinguish the date an application is lodged from the date they plan to travel. Someone intending to travel to Australia in December, for example, should not assume the new requirement depends on their travel date alone.

What information will applicants have to provide?

Biometrics are physical characteristics used to help establish and verify a person’s identity. Under Australia’s biometric collection process, these can include a digital image of the face and fingerprints.

The department uses biometric information to help prevent identity fraud, verify applicants and support immigration and border-security checks. Information may be compared with existing records, and the department says biometric data is collected, stored and used under applicable Australian legislation and privacy safeguards.

Applicants should follow the precise requirements in their notification rather than assume that every person will undergo an identical procedure.

Two possible routes: collection centre or mobile app

Depending on their circumstances and the instructions they receive, applicants may be directed to one of India’s Australian Biometrics Collection Centres (ABCCs), operated by VFS Global, or may qualify to complete an identity check using the Australian Immi App.

1. In-person biometric collection

Applicants instructed to attend a collection centre must follow the appointment process and bring the required documents, including the valid travel document specified in their instructions. Australia has announced 16 biometric collection centres across India.

Do not book an appointment simply because you have lodged a visa application. Wait until the Department of Home Affairs issues the relevant biometric requirement and tells you how to proceed.

2. Digital identity check through the Australian Immi App

The app provides an alternative for eligible applicants. The official process requires a biometric instruction letter containing a Visa Lodgement Number (VLN) beginning with “AUI”, along with a valid passport. Applicants use the app to enter the VLN, scan their passport details and chip where applicable, confirm the information and submit a live facial image.

The distinction matters: the app’s identity-check process collects passport information and a facial image; it does not capture fingerprints. Applicants whose VLN does not begin with “AUI” must attend an ABCC under the department’s published instructions.

The digital route is therefore not an option that everyone can choose independently. Eligibility and the instructions in the individual letter determine the available method.

Will visa processing take longer?

The Australian Government says the expanded biometric programme is not expected to adversely affect visa processing times, provided applicants complete any requested steps promptly.

That is an expectation, not a guarantee that every application will be processed within its usual timeframe. Delays could arise if an applicant overlooks an email, books the wrong appointment, cannot complete the app process or fails to provide the requested information.

Applicants should continue monitoring their email and ImmiAccount and respond to official requests within the specified timeframe. Anyone applying through an authorised migration agent should also make sure the agent receives and communicates any relevant instructions.

Privacy, security and avoiding scams

Biometric information is sensitive personal data. The department says the information is managed in accordance with Australian legislation and applicable local laws, with safeguards intended to protect personal information.

Applicants should use official Australian Government channels to verify instructions and access the app. They should be cautious of unsolicited messages requesting passport scans, fingerprints, facial images or payment through unofficial links.

Optional services offered by a service provider do not determine visa outcomes or guarantee faster processing. Paying for an additional service should not be confused with meeting the department’s actual biometric requirement.

What Indian applicants should do now

The new arrangements make identity verification an important practical consideration for people applying for Australian visas from India. They do not, by themselves, change the eligibility criteria for a visa or guarantee approval or refusal.

Applicants should take four steps:

  • Check the application date: The expanded requirement applies to applications lodged from 26 October 2026.
  • Wait for official instructions: Do not book a biometric appointment or attempt the app process before receiving the department’s request.
  • Check the available method: Follow the letter to determine whether an ABCC appointment or the Australian Immi App applies.
  • Respond promptly: Complete the required steps and retain confirmation of submission or appointment details.

For India’s growing network of students, professionals, families and travellers with connections to Australia, the practical message is straightforward: the process may involve an additional identity check, but applicants can reduce avoidable complications by relying on official instructions rather than assumptions or third-party claims.
