Himesh Patel: The British-Indian Actor Taking His Journey From EastEnders to Nolan’s Global Cinema

From more than 500 episodes of EastEnders to Yesterday, Tenet, an Emmy-nominated performance in Station Eleven and a major role in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, Himesh Patel’s career reflects the growing international reach of British-Indian talent.

For an actor of Indian heritage, reaching Hollywood is no longer necessarily the final destination. The more interesting question is whether an actor can move comfortably between British television, American streaming, major studio cinema and globally recognised filmmakers without being confined to a narrowly defined ethnic role.

Himesh Patel has done precisely that.

In 2026, Patel became one of the Indian-origin names attracting renewed international attention after joining the cast of Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. He plays Eurylochus, Odysseus’s second-in-command, alongside Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Zendaya, Lupita Nyong’o and Charlize Theron. The film opened internationally in July 2026 and was shot using large-format IMAX film technology. ABC News

His inclusion in the TIME100 Next 2026 is therefore more than another entertainment accolade. It marks the emergence of a British-Indian performer whose career has steadily crossed the boundaries between television, independent cinema, streaming and blockbuster filmmaking.

The long apprenticeship of EastEnders

Patel’s international profile can make his rise appear sudden. It was anything but.

Born on October 13, 1990, in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire, Patel grew up in a Gujarati family with roots in East Africa. His mother was born in Zambia and his father in Kenya, while the family eventually settled in Britain. Patel grew up speaking Gujarati at home and helping with the family’s local newsagent.

His professional breakthrough came in 2007, when he joined the BBC’s long-running soap opera EastEnders as Tamwar Masood.

He remained with the programme until 2016 and appeared in hundreds of episodes. That kind of television apprenticeship is easy to underestimate. A daily or continuing drama requires actors to learn quickly, sustain characters over years and work within demanding production schedules.

For Patel, it provided something Hollywood cannot easily manufacture: years of accumulated on-camera experience before becoming internationally famous.

The move from a British soap to Hollywood also demonstrates why diaspora careers should not always be measured by the speed of the breakthrough. Patel spent almost a decade building professional credibility before his most visible international opportunities arrived.

Yesterday changed the scale of the opportunity

The decisive transformation came with Danny Boyle’s 2019 musical comedy Yesterday.

Patel played Jack Malik, an aspiring musician who discovers that he appears to be the only person who remembers the Beatles’ music after a mysterious worldwide event erases the band’s existence from everyone’s memory.

The role required more than acting. Patel performed the character’s songs and played piano, giving him an opportunity to demonstrate musical ability alongside his dramatic work.

The film introduced him to a much larger international audience and showed that an actor emerging from British television could move into a mainstream global production without being defined primarily by his ethnicity.

That distinction is important.

Patel’s Indian heritage is part of his identity, but his major roles have increasingly been built around characters rather than ethnic stereotypes.

From Nolan’s Tenet to an Emmy nomination

Patel’s next major step came remarkably quickly.

He appeared in Christopher Nolan’s 2020 science-fiction thriller Tenet, beginning a professional relationship with the director that would eventually lead to The Odyssey.

In television, his performance in HBO’s Station Eleven demonstrated another dimension of his range. The 2021 miniseries, adapted from Emily St. John Mandel’s novel, earned Patel a Primetime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie.

He subsequently appeared in films including Don’t Look Up and Enola Holmes 2, where he played Dr. John Watson, expanding his presence across major streaming and studio productions. Onmanorama

The pattern is notable.

Rather than moving in a straight line from one blockbuster to another, Patel’s career has alternated between television, independent or ensemble work, prestige drama and major commercial cinema.

That diversity may ultimately prove more important than any individual film.

Why The Odyssey is different

Nolan’s The Odyssey represents perhaps the most globally visible role of Patel’s career so far.

The film adapts Homer’s ancient Greek epic and places Patel’s Eurylochus directly alongside Damon’s Odysseus. In the story, Eurylochus is not merely another member of the crew: he is Odysseus’s trusted lieutenant and a figure whose judgement becomes increasingly important as the journey deteriorates.

Patel told ABC News that Nolan’s approach to the production helped reduce the intimidation of working within such a high-profile ensemble, describing the director’s set as one in which the filmmaker did not create a hierarchy of preferential treatment. ABC News

That is significant because The Odyssey is precisely the sort of production in which an actor could disappear behind the scale of the project.

Instead, Patel’s Eurylochus has been given meaningful dramatic weight. Reviews have particularly noted the dynamic between Patel’s second-in-command and Damon’s Odysseus. WBUR

The casting also reconnects Patel with Nolan after Tenet, suggesting that the director’s decision to work with him again was based on an established professional relationship rather than simply his growing public profile.

The Indian connection is bigger than representation

For the Indian diaspora, Patel’s career has a particular resonance.

He is British rather than Indian, and his professional identity has been formed largely within British and international entertainment. Yet his Gujarati family background and East African Indian heritage place his story within a much broader migration history.

That history is increasingly visible in global entertainment.

Indian-origin communities have developed across Britain, East Africa, North America and other parts of the world over generations. Their children are now entering industries in which cultural background can coexist with highly international professional identities.

Patel is a useful example because his career does not depend on constantly foregrounding his Indian identity.

He can play a British television character, an American musician, a science-fiction operative, Sherlock Holmes’s famous associate and a figure from ancient Greek mythology.

That is arguably a more mature form of representation: Indian-origin performers increasingly being allowed the full range of global characters.

His next challenge may be more interesting than his breakthrough

Patel’s success also highlights a larger problem facing actors from minority backgrounds.

Getting a breakthrough role is only the beginning. Sustaining a career requires repeatedly demonstrating that audiences and filmmakers will accept an actor across genres and character types.

Patel has already moved from soap opera to musical comedy, science fiction, prestige television, ensemble satire, period mystery and mythological epic.

His upcoming work keeps that trajectory moving. He is also attached to the new X-Files series, with the pilot directed by Ryan Coogler, and has continued his association with the Enola Holmes franchise. Reporting in 2026 confirmed that the X-Files pilot had completed filming. The Direct

The challenge now is not proving that Patel can reach Hollywood.

It is demonstrating that he can become one of the actors whom major filmmakers repeatedly turn to when they need range, credibility and international screen presence.

A new generation of global Indian talent

Himesh Patel’s journey offers a useful lesson for the global Indian community.

His career was not built through one viral performance or one overnight Hollywood opportunity. It developed through a long period of professional work, followed by increasingly ambitious roles.

That makes his TIME100 Next recognition particularly appropriate.

The significance of Patel’s story is not simply that a British actor of Gujarati heritage has entered a Christopher Nolan epic. It is that his career illustrates how diaspora identity and global professional identity can coexist without one limiting the other.

For young Indian-origin performers in Britain, North America, Australia, East Africa and elsewhere, that may be the most important message.

The future of Indian representation in international entertainment will not be measured only by how many Indian characters appear on screen.

It will also be measured by how often Indian-origin actors are trusted to play the hero, the antagonist, the scientist, the detective, the soldier, the musician, the mythological warrior—or simply the character whose ethnicity is not the story at all.

Himesh Patel is increasingly operating in that space.

And from EastEnders to The Odyssey, his career shows how long-term craft can turn diaspora representation into something more powerful: global artistic mobility.
