From Harrods to the Met Museum: How Indian Designers Are Building a Global Diwali Fashion Market

Gaurav Gupta’s Harrods showcase, Sabyasachi’s New York reception and Tarun Tahiliani’s Dubai Fashion Week finale point to a growing international market for Indian festive fashion. The opportunity is substantial—but turning seasonal attention into lasting luxury business will require more than celebrity events and cultural visibility.

Diwali is increasingly becoming a commercial opportunity for international fashion retailers, and Indian designers are moving closer to the centre of that shift. In the weeks surrounding the 2026 festival, Indian couture appeared in some of the world’s most recognisable luxury and cultural settings: Gaurav Gupta at London’s Harrods, Sabyasachi Mukherjee at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and Tarun Tahiliani at Dubai Fashion Week.

These were not identical commercial exercises. Some were retail showcases, others cultural receptions or runway presentations. Together, however, they illustrate how designers are taking Indian festive dressing to international customers—and how overseas Indian communities are helping create demand for clothing that reflects their cultural identity without necessarily following traditional Indian wedding-wear conventions.

Harrods turns Diwali into a retail proposition

Gaurav Gupta’s collaboration with Harrods was among the season’s most visible developments. The designer hosted a Diwali celebration at the Knightsbridge department store on October 20, with a theatrical presentation inspired by the Ramayana, bringing together couture, movement and storytelling.

A festive trunk-show presentation ran from October 19 to November 2 in Harrods’ Private Suite. The retailer also included an exclusive Gaurav Gupta couture line in its eveningwear offer.

Harrods’ wider Diwali programme extended beyond fashion. Its official campaign included beauty experiences, food and gifting, alongside a planned illuminated façade display from November 6 to 8. The store also featured Indian-origin and Indian-inspired products across its departments.

The commercial signal is noteworthy. According to reporting on Harrods’ 2026 campaign, Indian-customer footfall on Diwali itself rose by 50 per cent. The retailer has not disclosed the corresponding revenue or average spending figures, so the statistic should not be interpreted as a 50 per cent increase in sales.

Nevertheless, the reported rise suggests that Diwali is becoming a more important occasion for customer engagement and seasonal planning at a major international retailer.

Sabyasachi brings Indian luxury to the Met

In New York, Sabyasachi hosted a Diwali reception at the Metropolitan Museum of Art on October 21, 2026, celebrating his multi-year association with the institution.

The event brought Indian fashion and festive aesthetics into one of America’s most prominent cultural spaces. It also followed the designer’s return to New York Fashion Week after an extended absence and the development of his retail presence in the city.

The Met reception was a cultural and brand-building event, not evidence of a department-store sales partnership. Its importance lies in the association of Indian design with an internationally recognised institution, giving the designer an opportunity to engage with collectors, cultural figures, fashion audiences and the Indian-American community.

For luxury labels, such visibility can strengthen brand recognition. Whether it translates into sustained purchases depends on retail access, customer experience and the ability to serve clients beyond a single event.

Dubai and London broaden the market

The Gulf offers another important market because of its substantial Indian community, international retail infrastructure and established appetite for luxury fashion.

Tarun Tahiliani closed Dubai Fashion Week’s Spring/Summer 2027 edition on October 26. The show placed an Indian couturier within a programme bringing together designers from the Gulf, Europe, Asia and other markets. Tahiliani was also preparing to open his first flagship outside India in Dubai’s Jumeirah district, marking a more substantial retail commitment than a one-off runway appearance.

London’s programme included Anamika Khanna’s couture presentation at the UK–India Creative Circle’s Diwali celebration on October 30, in collaboration with Amrapali Jewels. The event at the Royal Automobile Club brought together fashion, jewellery and creative-industry participants.

Harrods also hosted a three-day pop-up associated with Khanna’s London presentation, according to fashion-industry reporting. Other Indian designers and labels, including Abu Jani Sandeep Khosla and Rahul Mishra, were part of London’s wider Diwali-season luxury activity.

A market that needs more than occasion wear

The commercial opportunity is not limited to elaborate lehengas, heavily embroidered saris or wedding couture. International customers may want lighter festive clothing, versatile separates, contemporary silhouettes and garments that can be worn beyond one celebration.

Designers including Anita Dongre have highlighted consumer interest in lighter fabrics and adaptable pieces. Manish Malhotra has also spoken about designing for customers celebrating in different international cities. Younger buyers increasingly combine Indian textiles and traditional elements with Western styling.

This shift matters to overseas Indians. A customer in London, Dubai, New York or Singapore may want clothing that reflects Diwali, a family celebration or an Indian wedding while fitting local weather, lifestyle and social expectations. Retailers that understand these preferences can reach customers who are not necessarily looking for conventional ceremonial couture.

The market is also wider than clothing. Jewellery, beauty, fragrances, homeware, festive gifting and food can all become part of a seasonal retail programme.

Can Diwali become a permanent global luxury season?

The scale of the potential audience is considerable. India’s Ministry of External Affairs reported an overseas Indian population of approximately 37.3 million in January 2026, a figure that includes non-resident Indians and people of Indian origin. This is a broad population measure, not a count of luxury consumers or Diwali shoppers.

The distinction is commercially important. A large diaspora does not automatically translate into a large luxury market. Purchasing power, location, cultural preferences, product availability and price all influence demand.

There is also a risk of treating Diwali as a marketing theme without understanding its diversity. The festival is observed differently across communities and regions; not every Indian-origin consumer celebrates it in the same way. Retail campaigns that reduce Indian identity to generic motifs, gold decoration and expensive occasion wear may attract attention but fail to build deeper relationships.

For international retailers, the next stage should involve sustained partnerships with Indian designers, artisans and cultural organisations, better representation of India’s regional craft traditions, and products that remain relevant after the festive season.

The 2026 activations show that Indian festive fashion is gaining international visibility. Harrods’ reported footfall increase offers an encouraging commercial indicator, while the Met reception, Dubai runway and London presentations demonstrate the growing reach of Indian design.

But the decisive test will be repeat business: whether customers return after Diwali, whether designers secure lasting retail relationships, and whether Indian craftsmanship gains a durable place in international luxury markets.

Diwali may be opening the door. Building a global fashion business beyond the festival is the harder—and more consequential—task.
