November 2, 2026

For millions of Indian families, migration creates opportunities that reach across continents. But money sent home cannot attend a hospital appointment, share a quiet evening with an ageing parent or remove the distance between a child and a mother or father. The real story of migration is not only about remittances—it is about how families sustain care, intimacy and belonging across borders.

The family economy that money cannot measure

A transfer arrives from Dubai, London, Toronto, Singapore or New York. It pays for medicines, school fees, a home renovation or a parent’s monthly expenses. In the family WhatsApp group, the transaction may be acknowledged with a simple message: Received.

But the financial transfer is only one part of the exchange.

For many overseas Indians, migration is a family project. Parents may have invested savings in a child’s education; siblings may have helped fund the first journey abroad; a spouse may have stayed in India while the migrant established a career overseas. Later, the direction of support can change. The person who once received help becomes the one paying bills, arranging medical care and supporting relatives back home.

Research on Indian transnational families describes these relationships as more complex than a one-way flow of money. A study of Indian professionals in Australia, for example, examined how remittances, gifts and inheritance connect family members across borders—and how gender shapes those exchanges. Family support can move in both directions, carrying obligations and expectations as well as financial value.

The question is not whether remittances matter. They do. The question is what happens when money becomes the most visible measure of care, while the less visible work of caring is left to someone else.

When parents grow older, distance changes meaning

Distance can feel manageable when parents are healthy and independent. A video call, a festival visit and regular financial support may help a family maintain its rhythm.

Ageing can change that equation.

A parent who once managed household responsibilities may begin to need help with medical appointments, mobility, medication, banking or everyday decisions. A relative living nearby may become the practical caregiver, while the son or daughter abroad becomes the organiser, payer and decision-maker from a different time zone.

A 2024 study published in Archives of Public Health examined data from 5,122 older adults in India, using the 2011 Building a Knowledge Base on Population Ageing in India dataset. In the study population, around 43% had at least one migrant child. The researchers reported poorer self-rated health and more depressive symptoms among older adults with migrant children than among those without migrant children.

The study also found that financial support from migrant children helped mitigate some of the adverse effects associated with migration. But the researchers emphasised that remittances could not replace physical presence and caregiving.

These findings need careful interpretation. The data are from 2011, and the study examined a specific population and focused on migrant sons. They should not be treated as a current estimate of all older Indian parents, nor as proof that migration alone causes poor health or depression. They do, however, illuminate a central challenge: financial support can improve material circumstances without resolving every consequence of separation.

For families abroad, the practical lesson is straightforward. A regular transfer is a useful part of a care plan—but it is not the care plan itself.

The person who stays behind also carries the burden

When an adult child moves abroad, care responsibilities do not simply disappear. They are often redistributed.

A spouse may become the primary caregiver for an ageing parent. A daughter may coordinate appointments and daily needs while also managing her own household and employment. A sibling living closer may shoulder emergencies, transport and hospital visits. These contributions can be essential, but they are not always equally recognised or compensated.

Research on emigrant households in Kerala has explored the reciprocal expectations between older adults and family caregivers. The relationships are not merely transactions: they involve ideas of duty, gratitude, obligation and what family members believe they owe one another.

That emotional complexity can make practical conversations difficult. The relative providing daily care may hesitate to ask for help. The migrant may feel guilty about being absent, even while working long hours to support the family. Parents may downplay their difficulties to avoid worrying their children.

The result can be a family that appears financially secure while the people doing the daily work of care are exhausted.

A more sustainable approach starts with making that work visible. Families can discuss who is responsible for appointments, who can respond in an emergency, how expenses are shared and whether the main caregiver needs respite or additional support. These are not signs of diminished family affection. They are ways to make affection workable.

Children growing up between cultures—and households

The next generation experiences distance differently.

Some children of Indian migrants grow up overseas, with grandparents and extended family in India becoming familiar faces on screens rather than people they see every week. Others spend substantial periods in India while their parents remain abroad.

A 2017 qualitative study of South Asian Indian immigrant parents in the United States examined why some parents sent young children to India to live temporarily with grandparents. The research identified several motivations, including the challenges of childcare, trust in grandparents, support from extended family and a desire for children to maintain Indian languages, customs and relationships.

The study does not establish how common this arrangement is among Indian families. It does show that transnational parenting can be a deliberate family strategy—not simply a consequence of crisis.

Yet the arrangement can involve emotional trade-offs. Parents may miss ordinary routines and milestones. Children may feel close to grandparents while also longing for their parents. When children later reunite with parents overseas, they may need time to adjust to new routines, schools, languages and expectations.

For families navigating these choices, cultural continuity is important, but so is the child’s emotional experience. Regular calls help; they do not automatically replace everyday contact. Children need age-appropriate explanations, predictable communication and opportunities to build relationships with both the people raising them and the parents living elsewhere.

The phrase “Third Culture Kid” is sometimes used for children who grow up across cultures, although not every child of migrants identifies with the term. Their experiences vary widely. The common thread is that belonging may be built across several places rather than anchored in one.

Technology connects families—but cannot do everything

Smartphones have transformed the experience of being far away. A grandparent can watch a school performance over video. A parent abroad can join a family celebration virtually. Photos, voice notes and group chats make everyday life more visible.

Research on transnational families has documented how communication technology enables migrant parents to remain involved in children’s education, activities and decisions despite physical separation.

But digital closeness has limits. A video call cannot reliably identify every change in an older person’s health. A message cannot provide transport to a clinic. A family group chat may circulate information without making clear who is responsible for acting on it.

Technology works best when it supports a human network rather than substitutes for one. A shared calendar, a list of emergency contacts, access to medical information with the parent’s consent, and a clear plan for urgent situations can turn communication into practical support.

Families should also respect the privacy and independence of older parents. Being far away can make adult children anxious, but constant monitoring may undermine the very autonomy they want their parents to retain.

A practical care plan for families across borders

For overseas Indians, a few deliberate steps can reduce the uncertainty that distance creates.

1. Agree on a care plan before a crisis. Discuss who can help locally, how medical decisions will be made and what should happen in an emergency.

2. Separate financial support from caregiving arrangements. Budget for routine expenses, medical costs and possible paid assistance. Confirm who will coordinate the services being funded.

3. Recognise the local caregiver. Ask what support they need, share responsibilities where possible and avoid assuming that one relative can manage everything indefinitely.

4. Make communication dependable. Set regular calls that suit both time zones. Make room for ordinary conversation, not only questions about health, money or problems.

5. Include children in family relationships without making them responsible for adult emotions. Help them know their grandparents and extended family, while allowing them to express the difficulties of living between places.

6. Review the arrangement as circumstances change. A plan that works for healthy parents may no longer be enough after a diagnosis, a fall, bereavement or a change in the caregiver’s own circumstances.

These steps are not a substitute for professional medical, legal or financial advice. They are a framework for turning good intentions into shared responsibilities.

The true measure of a family’s connection

Migration can transform a family’s economic prospects. Remittances can fund education, improve housing, pay for treatment and provide security. Overseas Indians also bring skills, ideas and experience into relationships that stretch across countries.

But a family’s well-being cannot be measured only by the amount sent home.

The deeper test is whether support reaches the people who need it, whether the work of caregiving is shared fairly, whether children feel connected without being burdened, and whether ageing parents retain both dignity and meaningful human contact.

For many families, the answer will involve a mixture of money, visits, local support, technology and difficult conversations. There is no single arrangement that fits every household. Some parents prefer independence; some families live together across generations; others are separated by immigration rules, employment or financial constraints.

The point is not to romanticise proximity or condemn migration. It is to recognise that the benefits of living and working abroad come with relationships that still need attention.

A remittance can arrive in seconds. Care is slower. It requires time, coordination, patience and the willingness to ask what a loved one actually needs.

For an Indian family spread across borders, that may be the most important transfer of all.
