Hunar.AI Raises ₹40 Crore: Can Voice AI Make Frontline Hiring Work Better in India?

Founded by Krishna Khandelwal and Shantanu Bhattacharyya, the startup is building multilingual AI agents for recruitment, onboarding and employee engagement. Its funding reflects a growing enterprise-AI opportunity—but the real measure of success will be better hiring outcomes, not simply more automated conversations.

A delivery company needs hundreds of workers before a busy sales period. A retailer is opening new outlets across several cities. A warehouse must fill vacancies across shifts, while applicants speak different languages and may not regularly use job-search platforms.

For the employer, the challenge is not just finding candidates. It is contacting them quickly, checking basic eligibility, scheduling interviews, answering questions and ensuring that selected workers actually join. For applicants, the process can involve repeated calls, confusing instructions and long periods without an update.

This is the operational gap that Hunar.AI, an Indian conversational artificial intelligence startup, wants to address.

The company announced a ₹40 crore Series A funding round in October 2026, led by Blume Ventures. Participants included Hyderabad Angels Fund, Together Fund, Seedstars, AVNM Ventures, PhysicsWallah co-founders Alakh Pandey and Prateek Maheshwari, and MediaMint co-founder Aditya Vuchi. The company says the new round brings its total funding to ₹65 crore. The funds are intended to strengthen its AI infrastructure, develop its products and expand sales and market reach.

Founded by Krishna Khandelwal and Shantanu Bhattacharyya, Hunar.AI focuses on frontline workforce operations: the recruitment, onboarding, training and engagement of people whose work happens in shops, warehouses, delivery networks, factories, financial-services operations and other distributed workplaces.

Its proposition is straightforward. Instead of requiring every candidate to navigate a website or wait for a recruiter to call, AI agents can communicate through voice calls, WhatsApp and chat, in multiple languages. They can ask screening questions, coordinate interviews, send reminders and support parts of the employee journey.

The technology could help employers manage large volumes of hiring activity. But it also raises a bigger question for India’s labour market: can automation make recruitment more accessible and efficient while keeping human judgement where it matters most?

Why frontline hiring is a different problem

Much of the public debate about AI and employment focuses on office jobs, software development and professional services. Frontline recruitment presents a different set of practical challenges.

A company hiring a small number of specialist professionals may be able to review applications individually. An employer recruiting thousands of delivery partners, store associates or warehouse workers across multiple locations faces a very different workload. Candidate contact, interview scheduling, document collection and joining follow-ups can consume considerable time.

Geography and language add complexity. Applicants may prefer a conversation in their own language rather than a lengthy online form. Some may have limited experience with formal recruitment systems, even when they are perfectly capable of doing the job.

Hunar.AI’s model is designed around these realities. Its products, Hunar Voice and Hunar Connect, use conversational AI to handle parts of hiring and ongoing workforce management. The company says its agents support multilingual conversations and can work across phone calls, WhatsApp and web-based channels.

That approach is potentially useful in India, where large employers operate across regions with different languages, accents and local hiring practices. It may also have relevance in other countries with large, geographically dispersed workforces.

The important distinction is that automating communication is not the same as automating good recruitment. An AI agent can contact applicants quickly, but speed alone does not establish whether a candidate has been assessed fairly or matched to the right role.

From recruitment operations to conversational AI

Hunar.AI’s founders have described a development process that began with direct exposure to recruitment work before the company concentrated on AI. The company says its early experience managing hiring and workforce operations helped it understand where candidates and employers encountered delays.

That background matters because frontline hiring is often a sequence of small, repetitive interactions rather than a single decision. An applicant submits an application, waits for a call, answers preliminary questions, arranges an interview and may need to provide documents or confirm a joining date. Each hand-off creates a chance for communication to break down.

Conversational agents can potentially reduce those gaps by making contact promptly and following up consistently. They may also free recruiters to spend more time on complex cases, candidate support and final decisions instead of repeatedly calling applicants to confirm basic information.

Hunar.AI says it has expanded beyond initial screening into onboarding, training and employee engagement. These applications could help employers communicate routine information, gather feedback and identify issues that might otherwise go unnoticed in a distributed workforce.

The company’s October funding announcement reported that its platform handled roughly 500,000 conversations a day after substantial growth over the preceding year. It also stated that 200,000 people had obtained employment through conversations with its agents during September 2026.

These are company-reported figures, not independently audited measures of impact. The term “conversations” also needs context: a conversation is not necessarily a unique person, a completed recruitment process or a confirmed long-term job placement. Understanding the actual employment impact would require additional information about how the figures are calculated, how many candidates ultimately joined, and how long those jobs lasted.

That distinction should not diminish the scale of the company’s ambition. It simply identifies the evidence needed to assess it properly.

The opportunity—and the limits—of multilingual AI

For India, one of the most interesting aspects of conversational recruitment is language accessibility.

A candidate who is uncomfortable with a formal online form may find a spoken interaction easier. A worker can receive interview reminders or onboarding instructions through a familiar communication channel rather than having to learn a separate application. For employers, standardised conversations may also help ensure that candidates receive consistent basic information.

Yet multilingual capability is not a simple matter of translating the same script into different languages. Speech systems must contend with regional accents, code-switching, background noise, interruptions and differences in how people express uncertainty or explain their experience.

A system that misunderstands an answer may incorrectly classify a qualified applicant. An automated assessment that treats fluency in a particular language as a proxy for job suitability could disadvantage people whose skills are strong but whose speech differs from the model’s expectations.

This is especially important when AI moves beyond scheduling and administrative support into screening, scoring or shortlisting candidates. Employers should be able to explain what criteria are being used, test whether the system produces uneven outcomes across language groups and provide a route for human review.

The right benchmark is not whether a machine can hold a convincing conversation. It is whether the process produces reliable, job-relevant decisions.

What employers should ask before adopting AI HR agents

Hunar.AI’s funding arrives as businesses explore ways to integrate AI into routine operations. For companies considering similar tools, four questions deserve attention.

Does it improve actual hiring outcomes? Faster first contact is useful, but employers should also measure interview attendance, offer acceptance, joining rates, early attrition and candidate satisfaction.

Can applicants reach a human? Automated systems should provide a clear escalation path when someone needs clarification, has a disability-related accommodation request or disputes an assessment.

How is candidate data handled? Recruitment conversations can contain phone numbers, employment histories, identity documents and other personal information. Employers should understand what is collected, how long it is retained, who can access it, whether it is used to train models and how consent and deletion requests are handled.

Can the system be audited? Employers need documented criteria, monitoring for errors and bias, and human oversight for consequential decisions. A vendor’s claim of efficiency is not a substitute for evidence from the employer’s own workforce.

These safeguards are not arguments against automation. They are what allow businesses to use it responsibly and maintain trust with the people whose employment prospects are affected.

What the funding means for India’s AI startup ecosystem

The round illustrates how Indian enterprise-AI companies are targeting operational problems rather than building only general-purpose chatbots. In sectors with large workforces, even modest improvements in communication and coordination can matter—provided they translate into measurable results.

It also points to a potentially exportable category of software. Multilingual recruitment and workforce coordination are not uniquely Indian problems. Companies in logistics, retail, healthcare and other labour-intensive sectors around the world face similar challenges, although each market has its own language, regulatory and employment requirements.

For Hunar.AI, the next stage will require more than expanding conversation volumes. It will need to demonstrate that its technology can handle complex, real-world interactions reliably, integrate with employers’ existing systems and deliver benefits that justify the cost of deployment.

Funding gives a startup room to build and sell. It does not, by itself, prove product quality, fair outcomes or commercial durability.

The real measure is the worker’s experience

The promise of AI in frontline hiring should ultimately be judged from both sides of the recruitment process.

For employers, a useful system reduces unnecessary administration and helps fill roles with suitable people. For candidates, it should mean clearer communication, fewer missed updates and a fair chance to demonstrate their ability. For workers who have already joined, it should make training and workplace support easier to access—not create another layer of automated messages that nobody answers.

Hunar.AI has identified a substantial operational problem and attracted investors to its proposed solution. Its next challenge is to show, with transparent evidence, that faster conversations lead to better employment outcomes.

In recruitment, the most important number is not how many calls an AI agent can make. It is how many people find suitable work, understand what is expected of them and have a fair opportunity to succeed once they arrive.
