From Bollywood Glamour to Indian Couture: What Manish Malhotra’s 2026 Fashion Week Story Says About Indian Fashion

Manish Malhotra’s return to Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI in New Delhi comes at a moment when Bollywood, bridal couture, celebrity influence and corporate capital are no longer separate forces in Indian luxury. Together, they are reshaping how Indian fashion is created, marketed and consumed.

For decades, Indian fashion had an unusual relationship with cinema.

Designers dressed actors. Actors made clothes desirable. Weddings borrowed the glamour. Magazines amplified the images. And eventually, social media turned the entire cycle into a continuous stream of aspiration.

Few designers embody that evolution more clearly than Manish Malhotra.

His career began in costume styling and expanded into a luxury fashion house whose identity is closely associated with Bollywood glamour, weddings, couture and celebrity culture. His return to the Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI stage in New Delhi during the October 13–18, 2026 edition is therefore interesting for a reason larger than a runway appearance.

It illustrates how Indian fashion has changed from an industry primarily selling garments into one increasingly selling identity, occasion, celebrity association and lifestyle.

And that may be one of the most important stories in Indian luxury today.

When the red carpet became part of the runway

In traditional fashion systems, the runway was supposed to create trends that eventually filtered into popular culture.

India developed a different route.

Cinema became one of the country’s most powerful fashion laboratories.

Malhotra’s own career demonstrates this unusual trajectory. Lakmē Fashion Week’s official profile describes his work across Bollywood design, styling, bridal and couture, noting that he has designed for numerous films and established his label as a major name in Indian occasionwear.

That background matters.

The designer did not simply move from fashion into entertainment. He emerged from entertainment and helped convert cinematic glamour into a commercial fashion language.

A sequinned lehenga seen on a film star could become a wedding aspiration. A celebrity appearance could become a fashion campaign. A runway model could be styled to look like a movie premiere guest.

The boundaries began disappearing.

By 2026, the fashion show is no longer necessarily just a presentation of clothes. It can also be a carefully constructed cultural event designed to generate images, conversations, social-media engagement and consumer desire.

Lakmē Fashion Week itself now describes its platform as a fashion-and-lifestyle event bringing together designers, brands and industry stakeholders, with more than 100 designers and brands participating through its seasonal showcases.

The runway is therefore also media.

The Indian wedding is fashion’s commercial superpower

There is another reason the Manish Malhotra story matters: India’s luxury fashion economy is deeply connected to weddings and celebrations.

In Europe, haute couture developed around an extremely exclusive fashion system. In India, couture has found a powerful commercial anchor in ceremonies.

The Indian wedding can involve multiple functions, multiple outfits, jewellery, beauty, accessories and increasingly elaborate visual production.

That creates an ecosystem in which couture is not merely clothing.

It becomes part of the choreography of an important life event.

A designer’s outfit may appear at a sangeet, engagement, wedding ceremony or reception. The garment is photographed extensively, circulated on Instagram and remembered as part of a family’s personal history.

This is why Indian bridal couture has a different economic logic from conventional seasonal fashion.

The customer is not necessarily buying a dress for a season.

They may be buying a garment for a moment that is expected to become part of family memory.

Malhotra’s business has historically occupied precisely this intersection of occasion, glamour and craftsmanship.

From designer label to corporate luxury brand

Perhaps the biggest transformation, however, is taking place behind the runway.

Indian designer labels are increasingly becoming businesses capable of attracting institutional capital, building retail networks and expanding into adjacent categories.

The Manish Malhotra label provides a particularly clear example.

In October 2021, Reliance Brands Limited acquired a 40% stake in MM Styles Private Limited, the company behind the Manish Malhotra brand. The partnership was explicitly designed to accelerate the label’s growth in India and internationally, with plans involving retail expansion, technology, experiential commerce and broader lifestyle opportunities.

This was more than a financing transaction.

It represented a change in the way successful Indian designers could think about scale.

A designer once had to choose between preserving exclusivity and expanding commercially.

Corporate partnership offers another possibility: build systems around the creative identity without necessarily abandoning the identity itself.

Reliance’s current brand portfolio continues to list Manish Malhotra among its partner brands, alongside major international luxury names.

That positioning says something important about the changing Indian market.

Indian couture is no longer being treated simply as a niche cultural category. It is increasingly being considered part of the country’s broader luxury and lifestyle economy.

The rise of luxury prêt

There is another subtle shift underway.

Couture creates prestige, but prêt — ready-to-wear or more immediately accessible luxury — creates scale.

That distinction is particularly important for Indian designers.

A customer may not purchase an elaborate couture bridal ensemble every year. But the same consumer can potentially buy festive separates, accessories, beauty products or other lifestyle extensions.

This is why diversification has become central to the growth strategy of luxury brands.

The objective is not necessarily to make every product inexpensive.

It is to create different entry points into the brand.

A couture customer may be buying the most exclusive expression of the label. Another consumer may encounter the brand through a more accessible product or digital experience.

The brand then becomes larger than its most expensive garment.

The transformation is visible across the Indian luxury industry. Reliance Retail says its fashion-and-lifestyle business now operates across value, mid, premium and luxury segments and has built a portfolio containing both Indian designer brands and international luxury names.

That infrastructure matters because luxury ultimately needs distribution.

Beautiful clothes alone do not create a global luxury company.

Retail, digital commerce, customer data, supply chains, marketing, international distribution and brand management do.

Bollywood remains the secret weapon

Yet there is something that corporate infrastructure cannot manufacture easily: cultural relevance.

This is where Bollywood continues to give Indian designers an extraordinary advantage.

The celebrity system provides instant storytelling.

When a well-known actor wears a designer’s creation, the garment is not seen merely as fabric, embroidery and construction. It becomes attached to personality, character, beauty and status.

That association can be particularly powerful in India, where cinema has historically influenced everything from hairstyles to wedding music.

Malhotra’s brand was explicitly described by Reliance as standing at the intersection of fashion and movie entertainment, with the partnership intended to expand it into a broader lifestyle portfolio.

That formula has international potential too.

For the Indian diaspora, Bollywood is already a global cultural bridge. Indian weddings in Dubai, London, New York, Toronto and other international centres increasingly exist within a visual vocabulary that combines Indian tradition with global luxury aesthetics.

The opportunity for Indian designers is therefore not simply to export clothes.

It is to export a way of celebrating.

Social media has changed the runway’s economics

The old fashion show had a limited lifespan.

Models walked. Editors watched. Photographers filed pictures. Newspapers published them the next morning.

The 2026 fashion show lives differently.

A single runway moment can be photographed, filmed, clipped, reposted, reviewed and transformed into dozens of pieces of digital content within hours.

Lakmē Fashion Week’s own 2026 Content Creators Program demonstrates how central this ecosystem has become. The official programme invited emerging creators to produce content around the New Delhi event and required selected participants to create daily reels during the fashion week.

This is an important change in the economics of attention.

The runway is no longer only watched by people sitting beside it.

It is watched through phones by audiences who may be thousands of kilometres away.

For designers, that means a fashion show can function simultaneously as:

  • a product presentation;
  • a celebrity event;
  • a brand campaign;
  • a content engine;
  • a press opportunity;
  • and a direct route into consumer imagination.

The distinction between fashion media and entertainment media is becoming increasingly difficult to maintain.

But glamour alone cannot sustain luxury

There is, however, a caution behind all this glitter.

Celebrity visibility can create attention. It cannot automatically create long-term brand value.

Luxury depends on craftsmanship, consistency, design distinctiveness, customer experience and scarcity. It also needs an economic model capable of supporting artisans and skilled production rather than reducing Indian craftsmanship to decorative symbolism.

The corporate expansion of Indian couture therefore brings both opportunity and responsibility.

Scaling a label can create jobs, strengthen supply chains and give Indian craftsmanship greater international exposure.

But scale can also create pressure to produce faster, reach wider audiences and commercialise every successful visual idea.

The central question for Indian luxury is consequently not simply how big can these brands become?

It is how much can they grow without losing the cultural and creative qualities that made them valuable in the first place?

What Manish Malhotra’s 2026 moment really represents

Manish Malhotra’s return to Lakmē Fashion Week x FDCI is best understood not merely as another designer appearing on another runway.

It represents a fashion ecosystem that India has built in its own way.

Cinema supplies cultural influence.

Weddings supply recurring demand.

Craft supplies authenticity.

Celebrity culture supplies visibility.

Digital media supplies speed.

Corporate capital supplies scale.

And increasingly, global retail supplies reach.

That combination is distinctly Indian.

The traditional Western fashion model often imagines the runway as the centre from which influence flows outward. India’s model is more circular: cinema, weddings, social media, celebrities, designers and consumers continually influence one another.

That may be the country’s real luxury advantage.

The future of Indian fashion will not be decided by whether designers can imitate Paris, Milan or New York.

It will be decided by whether India can turn its own enormous cultural vocabulary — cinema, craft, weddings, music, jewellery, textiles and celebration — into globally respected luxury without stripping away the meaning behind it.

That is the more interesting story behind Manish Malhotra fashion 2026.

The clothes will have their moment under the runway lights.

The bigger test is what happens after the applause.
