Ducati DesertX V2: Can the New 890cc Adventure Bike Conquer India’s Toughest Touring Routes?

Ducati’s second-generation DesertX arrives with a smaller-capacity engine, a redesigned chassis and a clear ambition: to become more capable away from the tarmac without losing the performance expected of a premium Italian motorcycle. For India, where a weekend ride can move from an expressway to broken mountain roads and gravel tracks in a matter of kilometres, that combination could be particularly relevant.

The new Ducati DesertX V2 is expected to launch in India in November 2026, with an estimated ex-showroom price of ₹19 lakh to ₹22 lakh. The launch month and price remain estimates, although Ducati has confirmed that the new-generation motorcycle is planned for India in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Its headline change is the new 890cc V2 engine, replacing the outgoing DesertX’s 937cc Testastretta L-twin. The displacement has fallen, but Ducati has retained the headline power and torque figures while revising the chassis, suspension, ergonomics and electronics.

The important question is not whether the new DesertX has fewer cubic centimetres. It is whether the complete package makes the motorcycle more usable, more confidence-inspiring and better suited to long-distance adventure riding.

A new V2 engine: smaller capacity, broader purpose

The new DesertX uses Ducati’s 890cc, 90-degree V2 engine with Intake Variable Timing (IVT). Ducati quotes a maximum output of 110hp at 9,000rpm and 92Nm of torque at 7,000rpm. Some Indian listings express the power figure as approximately 108.8bhp; the manufacturer’s published figure is 110hp.

The IVT system is designed to help the engine deliver useful performance across a broad range of engine speeds. Ducati says 70 per cent of peak torque is available from as low as 3,000rpm, a characteristic that could be useful when negotiating slow corners, climbing loose surfaces or accelerating out of a bend.

That matters on an adventure motorcycle. Peak power makes an impressive specification-sheet headline, but tractable low- and mid-range delivery can be more valuable when the rider is balancing throttle, traction and terrain.

The six-speed gearbox has ratios tailored to the DesertX. The first four gears are shorter to assist low-speed riding and obstacle negotiation, while the sixth gear is longer for highway cruising. Ducati Quick Shift 2.0 enables clutchless upshifts and downshifts.

The engine is also a structural element of the new aluminium monocoque chassis. This is a substantial architectural change from the previous motorcycle’s tubular steel trellis frame. Ducati’s objective is to create a compact, rigid structure while managing the placement of major components.

The reduction from 937cc to 890cc should not be mistaken for a move downmarket. The new engine retains the same quoted peak power and torque as the outgoing model, while Ducati claims a more sustained torque curve. Real-world refinement, heat management and low-speed throttle response will be important aspects to assess in Indian conditions.

Built for the rough stuff: 21-inch front, 18-inch rear

2026 Ducati DesertX V2 adventure motorcycle

The DesertX’s off-road intent is clear from its wheel and suspension package. It uses a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear tubeless spoked-wheel setup, paired with Pirelli Scorpion Rally STR tyres. The front wheel is designed to help the motorcycle roll over obstacles, while the 18-inch rear wheel supports the range of tyre options commonly associated with adventure riding.

Suspension is handled by fully adjustable 46mm KYB upside-down front forks with 230mm of travel and a KYB rear monoshock offering 220mm of travel. The rear uses a progressive linkage system, intended to provide a more controlled response through its travel. Braking hardware includes twin 305mm front discs with Brembo M4.32 radial calipers.

These are serious components for a motorcycle intended to travel beyond smooth roads. Long suspension travel can help absorb rough surfaces, but it also contributes to a tall riding position. Ducati lists a standard seat height of 880mm, with lower-seat and suspension options that can bring it down to 840mm.

That height is worth considering carefully in India. On a trail, a tall stance can help with ground clearance and rider movement. In city traffic, on a sloping road or when manoeuvring a heavy motorcycle in a parking area, it can become a challenge for shorter riders.

Ducati quotes a wet weight of 209kg without fuel. That qualification matters: the motorcycle’s ready-to-ride weight will be higher once its 18-litre fuel tank is filled. Buyers should assess the actual balance and ease of handling rather than relying on a single weight figure.

Electronics: six modes, one essential responsibility

The DesertX uses a six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) to support its electronic rider aids. The package includes cornering ABS, Ducati Traction Control, Wheelie Control, Engine Brake Control and the bi-directional quickshifter. Riders can choose from six modes: Sport, Touring, Urban, Wet, Enduro and Rally.

The range of modes allows the motorcycle’s behaviour to be tailored to different conditions. Sport and Touring address road use, while Wet and Urban are intended for more controlled riding environments. Enduro and Rally are designed for off-road conditions, with different levels of electronic intervention.

The electronics can help a rider manage the motorcycle, but they cannot repeal physics. Tyre grip, surface conditions, speed and rider input still determine what happens when the road becomes unpredictable. For owners new to high-performance adventure motorcycles, learning the systems and practising off-road skills should be part of the ownership plan.

The new 5-inch full-colour TFT display presents riding information and settings. Ducati also lists cruise control, turn-by-turn navigation capability and smartphone connectivity through its multimedia system, with equipment availability depending on market homologation and specification.

One detail deserves clarification: the new DesertX has a 5-inch display, not the 8-inch screen sometimes associated with other premium motorcycles. Bigger is not automatically better; legibility, clear menus and practical controls matter more on a vibrating motorcycle travelling over rough ground.

India launch and expected price: what is actually confirmed?

Ducati has confirmed the new DesertX for India in Q4 2026, which covers October through December. Autocar India lists November 2026 as the expected launch month and estimates a price of ₹19 lakh to ₹22 lakh ex-showroom. These are useful planning figures, but neither the exact launch date nor the final Indian price has been announced in the sources reviewed.

The previous-generation DesertX is listed at a substantially higher price in some current Indian listings, but direct comparisons need care: model year, variant, taxes and pricing updates can all affect the figures. The new motorcycle’s final positioning will become clear only when Ducati India publishes its price and specification sheet.

At this price level, the purchase decision extends well beyond the showroom sticker. Insurance, riding gear, luggage, accessories, scheduled maintenance and the cost of replacement parts can add materially to ownership expenses.

Ducati has announced long valve-clearance inspection intervals of 45,000km for the new engine, alongside oil changes at 15,000km or two years, according to its published material. Those intervals are notable, though Indian-market service schedules and warranty conditions should be checked against the official local documentation.

India’s adventure-touring opportunity

India offers a wide range of terrain for adventure motorcycles: Himalayan approaches, high-altitude routes, forest roads, desert highways and long inter-state journeys. Yet the same geography brings practical challenges—variable road quality, heat, congestion, limited fuel availability on some routes and uneven access to specialist service.

The DesertX’s long-travel suspension, 21/18-inch wheels and dedicated riding modes are relevant to that mix. Its 18-litre tank and touring equipment also suggest a motorcycle intended to cover substantial distances. But range depends on real-world fuel consumption and riding conditions, neither of which should be inferred from engine capacity alone.

The motorcycle will also face established premium adventure-tourers from European and Japanese brands. Buyers will compare not just power and suspension travel, but comfort over a full day, reliability, dealer access, parts availability and how manageable the bike feels when the ride gets slow and technical.

That is where Ducati’s challenge lies. The DesertX has the hardware and the visual identity to attract attention. The ownership experience will determine whether that attention becomes long-term loyalty.

DOONITED View

The second-generation Ducati DesertX is a meaningful redesign rather than a routine engine update. The 890cc V2 retains 110hp and 92Nm, while the new monocoque chassis, revised suspension and updated electronics aim to make the motorcycle more capable across a wider range of riding conditions.

For Indian riders, the appeal is clear: a premium adventure motorcycle designed for serious off-road use without giving up highway performance. The caveats are equally clear. Its tall seat, premium price and likely ownership costs will make it a considered purchase rather than an impulse buy.

The most useful measure of the DesertX will not be how impressive it looks beside a showroom ramp. It will be how comfortably it handles a long day, how confidently it responds when the road deteriorates, and how easily its owner can keep it maintained.

Learning Point

When assessing an adventure motorcycle, look beyond engine capacity and peak power. Wheel size, suspension travel, seat height, weight, service intervals and local support have a direct bearing on the riding experience. A capable machine is one that fits both the terrain you want to explore and the realities of owning it.
